Teach English in Rome, Italy with TEFL Connect

Where on earth do we begin?! Rome is a wondrous city, bursting with ancient history, sightseeing galore and shopping to die for! Take a selfie at the rising Spanish Steps, then come back down to ogle at the delights in the windows of Gucci, Valentino, Prada and more.. A fashionista’s dream!

In just a short walk you can be marvelling at the enormity of the Colosseum, then the splendour of the Trevi Fountain. The Pantheon is a favourite here at TEFL Connect, an enormous temple come church, adorned with original artworks.

Food is plentiful, everywhere you turn there’s an inviting restaurant, gelateria or deli with infamous Italian delicacies.

It’s the historical hub of Italy, based around halfway down the boot. Florence to the north, and Naples to the south. Travel is cheap within Europe, so you’ll be able to explore at your leisure!

The centre of tourist Rome can be expensive to eat out, however if you live like a local, you’ll get by with plenty of money to spare. Teachers earn decent salaries  working just 20-25 hours per week.

Living expenses, rent and bills, are around €700 – €800 per month and salaries can range from €1,200 to €1,700 per month, meaning that you can travel, eat out and maybe even save comfortably.

Local restaurants offer great menus, just head 10 minutes away from the Colosseum, and you’ll find the costs go down immensely! There’s a supermarket on every corner also, offering fresh and local produce.

  • Single Room in a shared flat or home-stay: from €450 to €700 for four weeks
  • Double Room in a shared flat or home-stay (for students travelling as couples): from €350 to €450 per person for four weeks
  • Independent Apartment: from €800 a month for a studio to €3000 for an apartment with 2 to 3 bedrooms – great for groups.

The use of the kitchen is always included in the price. In some apartments it is also possible to ask for half-board, in which case the price varies according to the time of year and number of meals requested.

The accommodation manager tries to find housing for all of its students, even those who arrive at the last minute; nevertheless, to ensure a greater range of options we recommend that you register and inquire about housing at least one month in advance.

If you feel confident enough to arrange accommodation by yourself, on the following websites you can find rooms and apartments for rent. If you need suggestions about the best neighborhoods to stay, we will be happy to help you:

It all comes down to where you decide to live and work, following the course! You’ll have full assistance from the accommodations team, to ensure you have your new, more permanent accommodation secured, ready for the time you begin teaching.

  • Job market and employment possibility

There’s a good demand for TEFL teachers in Italy. Outside of the country, our team work with you to find jobs where you’d like to work – in any corner of the world! You’re fully assisted in securing your job after training.

  • Visa Requirements

EU passport holders can live and work in Italy without restrictions. For Non-EU passport holders, you will need a visa to live, study and work in Italy for longer than 3 months. Many TEFL providers allow their students to come to Italy and stay illegally after the three month period, however, TEFL Connect provides a course that allows non-EU passport holders a student visa for a year, which includes Professional Development classes, and you can legally work 20 hours per week. You not only receive your TEFL certification but constantly build on your skills at the same time!

In Italy, there are a range of TEFL teaching opportunities; from language centres to summer camps, private tuition to schools.

You’ll usually teach your students 20 hours per week, with time outside this for lesson planning, grading papers and so on.

Since there are jobs year round, there’s no peak hiring time! Contracts in schools and language centres are usually 6 months long.

You can expect to earn €1200 – €1700 Euro per month depending on job type and hours worked.
